Water and the Word: Creeksong
On the first day you shall take the fruit of majestic trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. (Leviticus 23:40)
I journey to the woods as often
as I can, because it is there that I learn
about and am reminded of who I am.
By the creek, taking in the scene
with full sensory receptivity, I can glimpse
life’s ebb and flow, no matter the season,
my heart’s ears parched
during summer’s droughts,
my marrow’s tongue singing
fall’s rainbow creeksong,
my mind’s eye calmed
with winter’s tranquil sufficiency,
my soul’s knees quaking
in the downstream rush
of spring’s abundance.
I journey to the woods as often
as I can, because it is there that I learn
about and am reminded of whose I am.
